2. Wheels and Axles: Torque, Not Guesswork

Solid (non-quick-release) axle nuts on a fat-tire hub should be torqued to 29.4-44 N·m according to Park Tool's reference table. Give each wheel a spin to confirm it runs true and does not rub the fork or frame, then do a quick spoke check: squeeze pairs of neighboring spokes, and any that feel dramatically looser than the rest have lost tension and should be retrued before the ride.

3. Brakes: Lever Feel, Pads, and Rotors

Squeeze both brake levers. They should feel firm and progressive, not spongy, and the bike should not pull to one side. Pull a wheel and look at the pad friction material: replace pads when the material is down to roughly 1 mm, well before the metal backing plate can touch the rotor. Scan each rotor for deep scoring, warping, or blue heat marks.
