If you ride off-road long enough, water will block the trail. Not a puddle you can splash through — a real creek, 10 to 30 feet across, flowing just fast enough that you stop and stare at it. Most water crossing failures happen before the front tire ever touches the stream. Take two minutes to run through these checks.

Motor and Electrical Considerations Specific to Fat Tire E-Bikes

Dry the Brakes Immediately

If the noise persists, opening the motor side cover to dry the internals is a shop-level repair, not a trailside fix.

Inspect Bearings Later

Water can work its way into hub bearings, bottom bracket bearings, and headset bearings during repeated crossings. This damage is not immediate — it shows up weeks later as play in the wheel or grinding at the crank. After a ride with multiple water crossings, schedule a bearing check within a few days or before your next major ride.


When Riding Through Is Not the Answer

Some crossings should simply not be attempted on any bike, motor or no motor.

Flash flood zones. Desert washes and mountain canyons in the Southwest can go from dry to waist-deep in minutes during monsoon season. A summer afternoon thunderstorm 10 miles upstream can send a wall of water through a crossing that was completely dry when you started your ride. If you see dark clouds upstream or hear a roar that was not there before, turn around.

Freezing water. Creek crossings in late fall and winter in the Northeast and Mountain West involve water temperatures near freezing. Cold water immersion below 50°F can cause loss of motor function in your legs within minutes, making it impossible to push the bike out if you go down.

Unknown depth and bottom. If you cannot see the bottom of a crossing, do not enter it. Hidden drop-offs, submerged logs, and entrapment hazards exist even in small creeks. In a 2023 report, American Whitewater documented 12 incidents involving submerged strainers in streams less than 20 feet wide — small water can still be dangerous water.

The best creek crossing technique is sometimes the decision not to cross at all. Turn around, find the bridge or the alternate route, and save the crossing for another day when conditions are right.
